What to wear in London in Autumn

I was recently asked by a friend what she should pack for her upcoming trip to London this Autumn. I guess, living here; that I’ve never really had to think about what I wear in the different seasons, simply because I have access to my whole wardrobe all year round. However, the erratic climate could prove tricky for those planning what to wear in London whilst holidaying or working over here short-term.

Of course, I rely heavily on the packing recommendations of other bloggers when it comes to trips elsewhere so it made perfect sense for me to put together this post to help visitors to London!

The weather in England is pretty well-known for being a little tumultuous. And whilst we have four full seasons they tend to get a little blurred together – for example, plenty of rain in Summer and Sunny days in Winter. Therefore it can be a little tricky to figure out what to wear in London.

Honestly, I wear jeans day in, day out. If I’m not at work then the chances are you’ll see me in a pair of trusty denim jeans. They aren’t too heavy to make you overheat when battling the crowds on Oxford street and are also durable enough to face whatever the weather throws at you!

Pick straight or skinny leg, black or dark wash denim if you want something really versatile. Those kinds of jeans work just as well during the daytime as they do for evening drinks at the Shard.

My favourites are the Molly jeans from River Island – they fit so well and come in plenty of finishes. I also love Gap jeans – they are always very comfortable and nicely fitted.

Basics to wear in London

As with any packing you need to get the basics of what to wear in London right. If you put together solid basics you will find it a lot easier to pull together outfits regardless of the weather.

Layer Layer Layer. Layers should be an essential on your list when you are deciding what to wear in London. The great thing about choosing layers is that they give you so much versatility.

Of course, it depends on how long you are planning to stay in the city, but as a minimum, I would suggest a couple each of vests, short-sleeved t-shirts, long-sleeved t-shirts, lightweight (thin-knit) jumpers/sweaters and leggings. If you keep your basics in a neutral colour palette then they will be a lot easier to mix and match and pair together. To add interest use some simple patterns such as stripes.  I like Uniqlo and H&M in the UK for layer-able basics.

I also love Boden’s machine washable cashmere jumpers – they are lightweight and keep their shape. They also come in some fab colurs.

I love a good pair of shoes, although I don’t always choose practical over pretty. If you were only going to pack one pair to wear in London then I would definitely suggest ankle boots.

From September-March I practically live in my tan leather and leopard ankle boots by Joules and my black block-heeled ankle boots from Zara.

If you have room in your case for a few pairs then I suggest adding a comfortable but dressy pair of flats and some trainers to wear in London. Dressy flats are wearable day or evening and trainers are perfect for all the miles you’ll clock up exploring the city.

An Autumn Jacket

Like I said above – the weather can be pretty erratic. One day you’ll be stripping off your layers to sunbathe in a pretty London park; the next you’ll be freezing cold and ducking into a cafe for a hot chocolate. This is especially the case in Autumn. So it is pretty important when deciding what to wear in London, and what to pack, that you choose a decent jacket.

Your Autumn jacket doesn’t need to be as heavy as your winter coat but a lightweight trench is unlikely to cut it on the really cool days. I tend to choose something like a Biker jacket to wear in London during the Autumn. I love my burgundy Zara one from last season as it adds a pop of colour to my monochromatic outfits and is thick enough to wear on cold days. It’s also nice enough to wear as an evening jacket so is super versatile.

Zara do similar leather or faux leather biker jackets every season too – I’ve got my eye on a black one next!

Autumn Scarf

Scarves are a staple of any Londoner’s wardrobe. This is mainly because they are so versatile in our constantly changing weather! I adore a tartan one I picked up years ago in Scotland but I like to have quite a variety to choose from! I love Joules for bright and colourful scarves and the fox one below is just too cute!

No list of what to wear in London in Autumn would be complete without an umbrella.

A bright red one would be my choice – I’m a lot less likely to leave it behind when travelling if it’s easily visible!

A cross-body bag is something I take with me EVERYWHERE I travel – I like having my hands free to take photos and read maps!

The Cambridge Satchel co do gorgeous leather bags in fab colours.

And there you have it – my essential packing list for a trip to London in Autumn. If you follow this packing list you’ll be all set for your visit – no matter what the weather throws at you! Hope you found it useful!

Great tips! Absolutely love your choices! I never know what to wear most times let alone when the seasons are changing and weather can be unpredictable – you got all bases covered!

Perfect Autumn Packing list! I think this list is similar to what I would suggest if one was to visit Jinan, China during Autumn. Sadly I would have to add a mask in case there was pollution, however surprisingly so far we have been having clear skies.

I hope to visit London one day! I’ve been reading so many articles about it over the summer!

Great style choices, layers and jeans are an absolute must. I love the MOTO range from Top Shop for jeans too! They do petite and I’m tiny 🙂 London is so fashionable, having useful ideas like these are so helpful to keeping on trend!

I love autumn! It’s actually my favorite season and I love the boots and scarfs you suggested! Unfortunately my next trip to London is planned in December – so I am hoping for a winter packing list as well! 🙂

Ah autumn collection looks refreshing. I m definitely going to Zara in Delhi and pick up something as it’s so tempting. Stripes are in isn’t it? Layers too are important if one visit London. I’m planning a Europe trip soon and will use the tips shared.

In autumn, actually, I prefer to wear simple shirts (long sleeves are okay, too) and a light jacket. And a scarf, of course. Having just escaped from the scorching summer heat, I want to savor the cool autumn before I suffer the extreme winter cold.

You can’t trust the good old British weather

  • Reply Yesh Sewdayal October 6, 2017 at 3:02 pm

You can’t go wrong with the basics and this list sums it up very nicely! Packing flat, versatile shoes are a must, not just for exploring and discovering but also for enjoying a night out! I also think scarves are a great accessory for any weather – depending on the thickness of it. Thanks for a great read!

Great packing tips, the basics are always a good idea, and having just left London, I would also recommend a scarf

I find Autumn a tricky one as the days start super cold but the afternoons can be sunny and warm. You are right, jeans and layers are the key!!

I swear I live in ankle boots. I feel like the outfits you described are what I feel most comfortable in so london is a great place for me in autumn 😂

  • Reply Medha October 6, 2017 at 9:10 pm

Love the footwear! Interesting post, always good to know what kind of weather to expect when you’re travelling to a country and what the ideal thing to wear would be, of course, keeping in line with fashion too! I quite like your choice!

I definitely agree with layering! It was chilly when we visited. I’m glad I packed clothes I could layer and had added warmth with the scarves I had too. These are great tips for the London Autumn weather.

I love your style, these are all looking fabulous dresses and fashionable, what I really expect in London’s autumn is that, it is more colder than the rest of the cities in EU well maybe I’m wrong. 🙂 love those colorful shoes by the way

  • Reply Helene October 7, 2017 at 2:27 pm

Great suggestions!:) I would also add a brolly to that:D Layering is key for autumn, that’s for sure! It’s still 30 degrees here in Madrid though, so it doesn’t even feel like autumn yet. Blegh.

I believe carrying the right type of clothes that would suit the weather and customs of any destination is one most important thing when I travel. That if done perfectly, I would say the trip is half already successful. But I m yet to get to a state was I can carry exactly the right clothes and all I can do right now is stuff my travel bag with all I can think of. POsts like this are truly useful for travelers like me.

  • Reply The Wildest Tales October 8, 2017 at 7:27 am

I’m a Londoner (by choice) so I would add to your list – instead of the ankle boots (or in addition to) pack a pair of trainers – if someone is visiting for the first time they will be doing a lot of walking! And I would swap a bag for a comfy leather backpack – got one not so long time ago and since then all my bags are slowly dying in the wardrobe! Btw it’s quite warm this autumn – so whoever comes, they are lucky!

    • Reply bettertogetherhome October 8, 2017 at 1:42 pm

Yep trainers are on the list already – I live in my converse 🙂 I’m not a fan of backpacks though – get hit in the face with them way too often on public transport ha!

  • Reply Heraa October 8, 2017 at 9:08 am

That’s a great list. I am planning to visit London sometime real soon so this is really would be very helpful for me. I am a T-shirt and jeans person with long boots 😍

Layering is the name of the style game this autumn. Fab ideas here.

  • Reply DTG October 8, 2017 at 9:47 am

Love reading fashion type posts, this one was fabulous, loved the tips and the outfit ideas. I need to buy some boots and a new coat this week, and some warmer clothing. I agree with you about the waring jeans, so comfortable and versatile, can dress them up or down too.

  • Reply Joanna October 8, 2017 at 10:20 am

I agree with layering up! Weather in the UK is very unpredictable and even if sometimes you will find sunshine and warm temperatures in London, most of the times it will be grey and rainy. I would definitely go for some color as well, to stand out from the crowd wearing only black.

  • Reply Anna October 8, 2017 at 10:35 am

Pretty helpful if you don’t know how the weather is gonna be – Layering seems like a good advice! I have only been to London in summer so I’ll consider this when I pack my bags for this autumn visit! I like the way you put pictures from other accounts in your post, it makes it fun to read. Thanks for sharing!

Jeans, jumpers, boots and a brolly is definitely needed in Autumn! I always have a few t-shirts ready for those odd summer like days though!
