Kitchen Wishlist & Makeover Plan

Our Kitchen

Since moving into our new home we’ve slowly been redecorating and updating the rooms to how we want them to look. One of the rooms I’ve struggled the most with is the kitchen.

It’s actually a really small space considering that this is a family house – you’d think a 3 bedroom house would naturally have a larger kitchen but clearly, the architects weren’t thinking too much about how the home would be used!

As you can see from the pictures (it’s quite hard to even get a photo!) the kitchen feels quite small and dated. And whilst it’s in decent shape now we’ve scrubbed it from top to bottom it really isn’t to my taste.

Completely redoing the kitchen just isn’t in our budget at the moment, mainly because I’m on maternity leave, so I’m going to give it a mini makeover and hope that at some point in the future we can fit a whole new kitchen!

Despite being a small kitchen there’s actually more built-in storage in here than there was in our old kitchen which I think would be more useful if we weren’t so keen on having our version of a ‘minimalist’ home.

FYI You can see our minimalist kitchen essentials here.

My Dream Kitchen

These are the inspiration boards for my dream kitchen:

Kitchen Inspiration Board 1

Kitchen Inspiration Board 2

Obviously the kitchens I’m inspired by are much bigger and grander than ours, however, there are a few key design factors I eventually hope to bring to our home.

The main one is the idea of darker base cabinets – either in a blue or grey finish, paired with wooden worktops.

I also like open shelving and butler style sinks. Oh and Smeg fridges *the dream* 😉

Tiles can be used as a statement in an otherwise very simple kitchen. I love the white brick shaped tiles that you can see on my inspiration board, paired with a fun and bright floor tile.

I love the combination of modern meets ‘farmhouse’ vibes that these kitchens have – they are practical and functional but still look good.

The Plan

I’d actually like to start by taking down some of the units – particularly the top ones. I think that doing so would open up the space a lot more and make it feel a lot bigger. We really don’t need as many storage cabinets as there are in this small room!

Repainting the walls and ceiling white will be another simple way to brighten up the room – and I’ll paint the woodwork too.

Once that’s done we can put up some shelves. I was thinking of going for some reclaimed scaffolding boards for a rustic look. Then I can get out my glass jars and put them back up on display!

kitchen accessories

I’ll incorporate our taste with some simple accessories – our wooden washing up brushes and utensils, and some tea towels that bring in the light blue and grey colours I love.

Eventually, we will probably rip the whole kitchen out and do a complete renovation project but in the meantime, this will have to do!

Kitchen Wishlist

Product Wishlist

Whilst I’m not likely to get my Smeg fridge of dreams any time soon *damn* there are a few products on my wishlist to update the kitchenware we have:

Kitchenaid Stand Mixer

Mason Cash Mixing Bowl

Croft Collection Glass Storage Jars

Tablecloth, Tea Towels and Fabric Napkins from The Linen Works

Wooden Chopping Boards

The beautiful Studio Blue collection by Denby

Can you see a theme with the items on my wishlist? I’m really drawn to blue shades – they are so relaxing and I plan to incorporate them as an accent colour into our neutral kitchen by purchasing beautiful and practical items. Most of the items in my kitchen get used daily and I’m a big believer in not saving things ‘for best’. Beautiful things should be used not just for display!

I’ll be sure to share the progress and the makeover once it’s complete so don’t forget to pop back for regular updates and follow me on Instagram.

I totally understand how your feeling, unfortunately we have a big kitchen. Which can also be a nightmare! We’re having a new kitchen fitted and new floor tiles and tiles. The kitchen we’ve gone for is red gloss, it’s so nice!

Yep it costs more with a bigger kitchen too I’m sure!
