Growing up my dad (who had been in the Navy) was forever telling me stories of wild, exotic places; of fascinating cultures and people and amazing sights he saw when he travelled the World. I was always convinced that I would do the same until I got older and started my career and started to feel like Worldwide travel would be forever out of my grasp.
But last year I realised that to travel didn’t necessarily mean to go off and do it full time in the way that my dad did, but that by taking regular trips we could see the World in a lot more practical a way. That being said travel still costs money (despite my firm belief in the quote “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer”) and so we are saving up for various trips that we want to take – ticking off our bucket lists tick by little tick.
This past year we’ve been able to go to some amazing places such as Prague, Scotland and Iceland, and we have some amazing trips planned for the rest of this year too such as Croatia and Berlin, so as you can imagine we’ve been putting away our pennies to go towards those! As we are saving as much as we can towards travel experiences I figured I’d share my top tips for saving money up for travel (or any other goals you might have!)
It feels like forever since I had the most amazing holiday in Iceland with my friend Carla (of Carla Thomas Photography) back in November – and I can’t believe its taken me this long to post about it *tut-tut* but here it is – our incredible trip to Iceland.
I have a really stressful job with lots of deadlines. It means I spend a lot of my time anxious and irritated and I find myself being really snappy with the people around me. It’s all made a million times worse when life outside of work gets stressful too. I’m writing this from a Glasgow coffee shop – I flew up yesterday (after a nightmare journey to the airport), tomorrow is my Uncle’s funeral and my nan (who I was supposed to be accompanying) is too ill to attend so I’ll be heading there by myself which is kicking my anxiety into overdrive. And yet here I am taking five minutes out to think about the little things that make me happy and grateful this week, and actually it’s really helping me to get a grip on myself *sometimes you really need somebody to give you a kick up the arse to remind you how blessed you really are (even if it is yourself)*…
I mentioned the other day in my #TheGoldenBurpee post that I recently got the Fitbit Charge 2 as a present from Scott (my husband) and that I am planning to walk the West Highland Way for Macmillan Cancer Support this summer (it’s a 96 mile walk eek!). I am determined to get fitter this year and I really think that using the Fitbit will help me achieve my goals 🙂
Now that my fractured foot is healed I am starting to do lots of long walks in preparation for the WHW, and whilst waiting for it to heal up over the last few weeks I set myself a minimum step count of 10k per day to increase my general fitness and motivate me to set myself better habits! Having my Fitbit with me every step of the way definitely keeps me on track and helps to motivate me to keep going when I’m struggling – even with my sore foot I found it really useful.
I love the fact that it monitors my heart rate with its PurePulse technology and lets me know when I am pushing myself enough to meet my targets, at the moment I am walking purely for distance but once my fitness level is better I will go back to jogging and so will be able to use the Fitbit’s monitoring tools to increase my speed and cardio health. Gosh that title is a bit of a mouthful isn’t it? Thank heavens i’m not writing this hungover (or still drunk!) – I actually love this feeling of waking up on New Years Day sober and fresh after a decent night’s sleep!
2016 was a strange year – in a way it flew by but there were also times where it seemed to drag on forever (especially that night where I stayed up to watch the US election results and cried into my cereal!!!)
I have done some amazing things this year, met some incredible people and had some fantastically fun times. Yet of course there has been darkness in this year too – and i’m not just talking on a global scale a la Trump and Brexit; for me my battles with anxiety and depression have really come to the fore, I ended my relationship with my mother after my parent’s horrendous divorce *although on reflection that’s only been a positive experience for me*, I have lost friends and family and I have had a very stressful work year. But I look at those things and whilst they were definitely negative parts of 2016 I can honestly say I am in a happier place now than I would have been if I hadn’t gone through them – I am so much stronger than I ever realised that I was; and that’s a really amazing thing for me to have realised.

Accor Hotels have asked bloggers to share how they would spend 24 hours in their favourite cities – and my favourite city is, of course, Glasgow! Glasgow is without a doubt Scotland’s coolest city – it might not have Edinburgh’s regal looks but it’s got personality, culture and energy by the bucket load and it’s really quick and easy to get to!
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately?!) I’m not a Kardashian and my bank balance certainly doesn’t have as many zeros as I’d like so clearly I’m not actually expecting to find any of these under my Christmas tree this year *I’ve not been that nice Santa*
